Sweden: Visit "Noisy Village" / Schweden: Ein Ausflug nach Bullerbü

Today I want to start my "series" about different beautiful places in Sweden that we visit during our holidays this year. As our trip was pretty much a Astrid Lindgren memorial tour, I want to first give you a little introduction about the author Astrid Lindgren and her book and movie characters. While Germans, Scandinavians, Dutch etc. can't even imagine that someone doesn't know her books, it seems as if they are not as common for english-speaking people. Well, Astrid Lindgren definitely is my all-time favorite author. We have all her books, some in differnet versions (like as a picture book or normal book), we have several CDs and we have all the movies. While you guys probably grab a Disney movie when it's raining, I tell my daugther to choose whether she wants to spend some time with Pippi, Emil or Lotta and then the whole family sits in front of the TV and just enjoys. Almost all stories play in Smaland (a part of Sweden), they are about kids playing outside, climbing trees, their daily pranks, big parties, nature, animals etc. - just about life as it was when AL was young. They are all full of life, funny, beautiful, sometimes sad - but not too much. They just touch your heart. When you read her books (and these are available in English, too), you will see that the style of writing is simple and straight, that there never is a superfluent word, but that the sentences carry feelings that you don't know where they come from. And you will encounter an author who never forgot how it is to be a kiddo. There aren't any hidden doctrines, nothing that she wants to teach the children. The only message is for the parents, telling them that all their kids need is freedom and security, respect, games and nature.

Another favorite besides the above mentioned books/movies is "The Children of Noisy Village". Noisy Village is just three houses right next to each other where altogether 6 children (+ later a baby) and their parents, one grandfather and a whole bunch of animals live. Well, obviously the animals don't live in the houses... The houses are so close to each other that the children from the middle house can climb on a tree and visit the neighbor boy ;) These six kids play the most creative games, are outside all day, sleep in the hay, help with the harvest, collect crawfish, etc. Lisa, who is the first person narrator, tells that one time a lady from the city said: "Well, it is beautiful here, but it must be really boring". Oh, how they laughed at this woman. "Boring? It's never boring in Noisy Village!"

Obviously one of our trips had to take us to Noisy Village, too. Astrid Lindgren got the inspiration for the 3 houses next to each other from her father's birth house which was the middle house of 3 such houses. And in fact the movies were made at exactly these 3 houses! The village is quite easy to find. If you follow the street from Vimmerby to Mariannelund, there is a sign to "Bullerbyn" (turn to the left). We had a wonderful time there. There are still people living in the three houses, but you can visit the garden of the middle one. There even is a little shop with old furniture and "stuff". There isn't much entertainment at Noisy Village, but the children quickly find something to do: The big swings, a ride on a horse, watching some chickens, a jump into the hay or climbing into Pippi Longstocking's lemonade tree,.. they really enjoy the little things in this wonderful atmosphere (and not only they...). Of course there is also a small café where you get some ice cream, cake and waffles! We are already longing for anothervisit of this peace- and joyful village!
